You will Learn how to...

Ride independently, controlling the horse at the walk, posting and sitting trot, and halt, as well as...

  1. Controlled circles at posting and sitting trots.
  2. Execute trot with loose reins, then shortening reins and halt.
  3. Mount and dismount without assistance.
  4. Adjust girth and stirrups with minimal assistance while mounted.
  5. Demonstrate and explain aids necessary to keep a horse on the rail.
  6. Demonstrate and explain how to keep trotting when other horses nearby are not troting.
  7. Demonstrate how to ride safely in a group at walk and trot maintaining 1 horse length between horses.
  8. Trotting without stirrups maintaining correct position and control.
  9. Maintain control and position during changes from the sitting to posting trot.
  10. Serpentine at the trot.
  11. Demonstrate and explain diagonals at posting trot.
  12. Demonstrate change of rein at trot through the diagonal, half turn and half turn in reverse.

Horsemanship Skills Include:

  1. Pick up all four hooves with assistance.
  2. Identify three basic parts of the foot; Simple foot care.
  3. Tack horse with saddle, bridle, and halter with minimal assistance.
  4. Name and identify five bridle parts.
  5. Name and identify ten equine body parts.
  6. Describe rhythm and footfall of the trot.
  7. Use body language to establish your "Pecking Order".
  8. Understand all terminology used in lessons.

**The student must be proficient at all these skills before advancing to advanced flat.
