Beginning Rider Lessons

    You Will Learn how to...

  1. Mount and dismount correctly with assistance.
  2. Perform tack safety check with assistance.
  3. Adjust Stirrups from horseback with minimal help.
  4. Hold reins correctly at halt, walk, and trot.
  5. Shorten/Lengthen reins properly on command and when necessary.
  6. Execute, with control, the halt, walk, and circle at walk.
  7. Demonstrate change of direction at walk.
  8. Negotiate patterns around obstacles at walk.
  9. Ride without stirrups at walk.
  10. Identify and explain the five natural aids.
  11. Identify and explain the artificial aids.
  12. Perform transitions from walk to halt and walk to trot.
  13. Demonstrate and explain correct position at walk, trot, and halt.
  14. Know the difference between posting and sitting trot.
  15. Execute posting and sitting trot.
  16. Know and demonstrate correct dismount and tack protocol.
  17. Emergency dismount at walk.

Horsemanship Skills Include:

  1. Demonstrate how to approach the horse safely.
  2. Interpreting equine body language when greeting the horse in the stall and pasture.
  3. Demonstrate how to tie using a quick release knot.
  4. Name and demonstrate the usage of five grooming tools.
  5. Identify five parts of the horse and saddle.
  6. Demonstrate leading and turning a horse.
  7. Know how to brush the horse correctly.
  8. Describe rhythm and footfall of the walk.
  9. Understand basic terminology.

**All the horsemanship and riding skills are progressive. The student must be proficient at each skill before advancing to advanced beginner training.
