Intermediate III Lessons

You will Learn how to...

Ride independently with control, maintaining a secure position at the walk, sitting and posting trot, and canter, as well as...

  1. Shorten and lengthen the reins at all three gaits.
  2. Perform rider exercises at walk, trot, and canter.
  3. Demonstrate "No" Frame, long frame, and medium frame at all three gaits.
  4. Describe and demonstrate aids for correct lead at canter with awareness of correct lead.
  5. Execute canter and counter-canter on circle.
  6. Demonstrate competency of position and control at canter, with and without stirrups.
  7. Explain and execute half halts at walk and trot.
  8. Demonstrate advancing proficiency of the half seat at canter with and without cavalletti.
  9. Perform individual warm-up at trot, and canter.

Horsemanship Skills Include:

  1. Identify and modify behavioral problems with free-lungeing.
  2. Indentify equine coordination problems and modify with free-lungeing.
  3. Indentify all major parts of the horse, saddle and bridle.
  4. Correctly measure the height of a horse.
  5. Describe the characteristics of any horse clearly enough for another person to recognize it within a group of horses.
  6. Be able to identify equitation faults and competency in other riders.
  7. Recognize obvious equine lameness and soreness.
  8. Understand all terminology used during the lessons.

**All horsemanship and riding skills are progressive. The student must be proficient in skills of the current and all lower levels before advancing to the next level, Hunter Over Fences I.
